Camping with Tim (up Red Pine)
I met Tim at Danny and Jannifer's place and after getting his pack loaded and some shopping at a local Fresh Market, we headed up to the mountains. We were on the Red Pine trail by about 1pm.

After crossing the Red Pine stream, we hiked another 15 minutes and then I decided to scramble up a gully to scout for decent camping spots. At this elevation (8800+ feet) we had a good 6 inches - 1 foot of snow on the trail. Our challenge was to find a dry spot without snow, fairly level, and not too rocky. Before long I found two spots, and we settled on the latter. Tim then scouted out from there to find an ideal spot to build our campfire.
Most of the wood on the ground was wet, but there were plenty of dead branches on the surrounding pine trees that were perfect for fuel.

I took an evening jaunt over towards the Maybird lakes (didn't quite make it there) to keep myself warm and test it out for a hike the following morning.

Tim settles in to his mummy bag which kept him nice and toasty through the night.
I got up a bit before 7 am and headed over to the Maybird lakes.

Looks like it was a great hike. Gorgeous scenery, good company, nice weather... I'm curious if Tim's boots are the boots I bought in 1996 for my Arkansas hike? They look very familiar...
Love the Quaking Aspens and the scene looking down the canyon. I'm glad you two could go hiking. I do so miss the mountains.
How awesome that you and Tim got to go hiking together! I hope you will post some more pictures! I'm excited you are adding to this blog now!
@Nathan: yes I believe those are your boots. I also used them in Philmont for 3 weeks and they are holding up well. Tim only wished they were more waterproof after slogging through all that snow.

WOW! You did add some more pictures...and that last shot takes the cake! Breathtaking! Thanks for sharing!! I also loved the sunset pictures too. It is hard for me to fathom such cold conditions and ice on the lake when it is still warm here...
